Organic vegetable gardening isn't limited to people who have backyards or those who live in rural and suburban areas. Organic gardening is possible in an urban setting and can be done using suitable containers. Amazing right? I'll tell you how to do it. Using containers for organic vegetable gardening have several distinct advantages.

1. Breath fresh air. Having a plant in your apartment or condo unit, literally breaths a whiff of fresh air because we all know that plants give off oxygen which we human beings need.

2. You can use it for decoration. Having organic plants beautify your surroundings. You can place it on the balcony or terrace of your apartment for sunlight. When it's cold outside, bring it inside and still it lights up the room. Instead of putting the containers on the ground, they can be hung from the ceiling. Punch a few holes so water can seep through and not drown the plant.

3. Organic vegetable gardening doesn't require soil to grow. You will use a potting mix which is a special recipe that includes materials that are lighter and provide more thorough drainage. The best part of not using soil is that you don't have to worry about soil borne plant diseases. Furthermore, there are organic fertilizers available like mulch to help your plants grow. In addition, mulch prevents the potting mix from drying out.

4. Don't forget to water your plants! Look for signs of wilting, like drooping or withering of the leaves. This means that your plants need some serious watering. Don't let it come to this by watering your plants frequently, but also remember to not drown the plants, just give enough water for it to be absorbed.

5. The best containers for organic gardening are those made from wood, clay or plastic. You must know what type of plant you are going to place in it, how long the roots grow so you know what size of the container will be. For example, if the organic vegetable happens to have around 15cm of roots and grows to about 25cm wide, it's best to get a container that measures 20cm deep and 25cm to 30cm wide. Don't limit the space of your organic vegetable plants, allow sufficient room for growth.

6. Get rid of pests. A group of ladybugs will fight aphids on your vegetables without harming the plants. Bugs like hookworms sometimes manage to get to the plant, washing the leaves in the sink will get rid of these pests. In addition, if you find slugs, use diatomaceous earth by sprinkling them into the potting mix.

7. There are many vegetables to choose from. Capsicum, bush beans, eggplant, lettuce, onions, peas, radishes, spinach and tomatoes are just some of the many you can plant.

Living in an urban setup doesn't impede you from growing your own vegetable garden. Containers can do wonders and is very ideal for today's urban dweller. Who knows, if you do well in growing your vegetables you can even end up selling the excess to your neighbors.
