Aquaponics mixes two different types of farming: aquaculture and hydroponics. Aquaculture is growing fish to eat and hydroponics is growing plants without soil.

Fish produce waste which the plants suck up via roots that are submerged in water. It's the best of both worlds and costs significantly less than hydroponics.

What exactly do you get from having a home aquaponics system?

If you take gardening as a benchmark as to how much your plants you can grow you can pretty much drastically increase everything. You can grow 10x the amount of plants in the same amount of space which means right off the bat you're going to produce 10x more veggies. The best part is that unlike hyroponically grown vegetables these ones will taste delicious.

If you want to get started with your own home aquaponics system it's actually very easy and you can be up and running in less than an afternoon.

To start you're going to need an aquarium that is going to hold your fish. If it's an indoor system 20 gallons is perfect and if it's an outdoor system the sky is the limit. You're also going to need a grow bed. A waterproof container with 8" high sides that's 2' x 3' works perfect (look around your hardware store).

The aquarium goes on the bottom and the grow bed goes on top. Add in a pump and a small filter and you're ready to rock. You can grab some fish and plants and be on your way (you will need to build a raft for the plants to sit on as well, but there are several different ways to do that... a guide will teach you everything).

That really all there is to it! Within a single afternoon you've built your own home aquaponics system and you'll be enjoying your first organically grown lettuce in less than a month (if you decide to plant some lettuce).
