aquaponics system types - Commonly Used Aquaponics System Designs For Growing Food

They are a number of aquaponics system designs that are used to grow healthy organic food. They can be defined by whether they use some type of grow media or not. One common type of system, which uses grow media, is often referred to as a flood and drain system. Another type of aquaponics system, which does not use grow media, is called a continuous flow system.

In a flood and drain system the water in the hydroponics grow bed is cycled in and out of the grow media. One advantage of this system is the flooding and draining of the grow bed helps reduce root rot. This system also provides the growing plants with a consistent amount of nutrients. This is because of the potential for holding bacteria in the grow beds. These bacteria turn ammonia into nitrates that the plants need to grow. The flood and drain is the system of choice for many home aquaponics system gardens.

In a continuous flow system the plant roots are suspended in a tank of water. The water inside the tank is continually flowing. In some systems styrofoam trays are used to hold the plants. The plants sit in the trays with their roots submerged in the water of a flow channel.

Whatever aquaponics system design you choose to grow healthy organic food with, consider using a plan to help you get you system up and running to its full potential as quickly as possible. There are a number of excellent resources on the internet to help you with this. Some are free and others require payment. Choosing to pay for the this type of resource will generally offer you more specialized information and may well be worth the money you pay for it.
